In the exhibition "Game Masters", the MK&G will once again focus on digital media and contemporary modes of graphic design. The show offers an in-depth view of the forty-year evolution of video and computer games, presenting the work of more than thirty international video game designers and creative teams, who have had a major influence on the development of new games, genres, figures, and fundamental principles of gaming. Some are gifted programmers or artists; others concentrate on narrative storytelling or the development of virtual worlds. The exhibition also incorporates interviews in which game designers have a chance to express their ideas. In addition to this, "Game Masters" shows 200 objects, including graphics, design sketches, and figure models, more than 100 amusement devices – which can be played by visitors to the exhibition – taken from the age of classic gaming machines (the arcade era) from the 1970s and 1980s, the latest consoles, smartphone game technology, immersive 3D games, and experimental game controls. The exhibition focuses on three areas: the "Arcade Heroes" section showcases visionary designers from the revolutionary, trailblazing arcade era. Leading contemporary designers who have had a major influence on the development of the medium are presented in the Game Changers section. The last section, "Indies", is devoted to the innovative and pioneering world of independent game developers. Beyond this, the exhibition also includes local designers and games to represent the distinctive regional and national gaming community in Germany.

The show was developed by the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Melbourne (ACMI), with support from the Victorian government.

In cooperation with the initiative Creative Gaming, organizer of the PLAY16 – Creative Gaming Festival, the exhibition will be expanded by the perspective on Game Culture in Hamburg.
