All our exhibitions are bilingual and include German and English texts. We also work with international artists and designers and we offer events in English.

You can book individual guided tours in different languages via the "Museumsdienst Hamburg".

Route to MK&G

We recommend travelling by local public transport.
The nearest stops are the main railway station with all U- and S-Bahn lines and bus stops.

For connections in and around Hamburg visit Hamburger Verkehrsverbund (hvv).

For timetables and booking your train journey please visit Deutsche Bahn.

For visitors from the local area, we recommend arriving by bicycle. Bicycle stands are located directly in front of the entrance.

For those arriving by car, the nearest paid parking garage is "Hühnerposten".

In front of the Museum, at "Steintorplatz", there are some paid parking opportunities but only suitable for short-term parking. A free handicapped parking space is available for visitors with mobility restrictions.

From Hamburg Airport, take the S-Bahn line S1 to the main railway station ("Hauptbahnhof"). The journey takes approximately 25 minutes.

For connections and timetables visit Hamburger Verkehrsverbund (hvv).

Groups & Guided Tours

Groups

Book your time slot for a group visit of 10 or more people via the Museumsdienst Hamburg. Admission is not guaranteed without a reservation.

Adults: 20 euros reservation fee plus 10 euros admission per person

Daycare centres, preschools, schoolchildren, students and trainees: 10 euros reservation fee for special exhibitions; free admission including two accompanying persons

Guided Tours

The MK&G offers individually bookable group tours of the collection and the special exhibitions - also in foreign languages and for special needs. An overview of the offers and further information on booking can be found in the online catalogue of the Museumsdienst Hamburg.

We also offer free programmes for people with special challenges.

The meeting place, project space and lounge for visitors, neighbours, travellers and museum staff is accessible free of charge during MK&G opening hours, offers a place where people can linger, read or speak with others.

Kids World

At the Hubertus Wald Kids World, stretching over 250 square metres, kids from 5 to 12 can try their hand at being designers, architects or artists. They can shape things, invent and build things, take photographs and make cartoon films, dress up or play with shadows. Grown-ups interested in design can also discover unusual and innovative things in our hands-on area, watched over by helpful attendants.

Open on weekends, during the Hamburg school holidays and on public holidays from 10 am 6 pm. Visits to the Kids’ World for groups are possible TUEFRI (except during school holidays). Please register with the Museum Service Hamburg.

Visitors can enjoy snacks and refreshments in the "Destille". We offer a large buffet with hot and cold meals and homemade cake, freshly prepared salads and beverages of all kinds.

Book shop

Walther König

The Walther König book shop offers a wide range of publications on art, art theory, architecture, photography and design. In keeping with the collection of the MK&G, the range on the topics of decorative arts, design, graphic design, fashion and non-European art is particularly distinctive. In addition, all publications and posters of the MK&G are available. A selection of children's books and design and gift articles as well as art postcards and posters complete the range. Orders can be placed by telephone or e-mail. The book shop is accessible free of charge.

Merchandise

The new MK&G tote bag is made of sturdy 100% organic cotton and is available in various colours exclusively at MK&G for 18 euros. The edition is limited.

Room Rentals

Guest at MK&G

The MK&G rents out the Hall of Mirrors and the Vestibule for events. The historic rooms offer a special ambience for readings, concerts, dinners, parties, banquets or balls. On request, we can arrange guided tours to accompany your event. In addition, the MK&G is available as a location for photo and film shoots. Please contact us if you are interested.

FAQs

No large bags (larger than 30 x 25 x 15 cm) may be brought into the galleries. Carrying clothing over one’s arm as well as small rucksacks in the galleries is allowed. Canes are only permitted if they have a rubber base. Umbrellas are not permitted. The MK&G is to be entered in clothing appropriate for public contact, including footwear. Only the police or authorised security services are allowed to carry weapons in the museum.

A cloakroom and lockers are provided for your use for clothing, bags, backpacks or umbrellas. The cloakroom service is free of charge and is available to our guests for the duration of their stay. Please note that we cannot accept liability for the cloakroom or the contents of the lockers.In case of loss of a cloakroom key, a handling fee of € 40 is payable. Bags no larger than 30 x 25 x 15 cm can be taken into the galleries.

Eating and drinking are only allowed in the foyer and in the „Freiraum“. It is permitted to carry drinks for small children. Food and drinks are offered in our restaurant "Destille" on the 1st floor. Smoking or the consumption of drugs or alcohol are not permitted. Entry will not be granted to anyone in an intoxicated state or under the influence of alcohol.

Only paper and pencils are allowed as working materials. Animals are not permitted in the building, with the exception of service animals.

Please be considerate of our other guests, avoid noise, and put your mobile phones on mute. Emergency exits and passageways are to be kept clear. Emergency exits may only be used in the event of an emergency. 

We would like to indicate that there is no room for any discriminating statements or actions at the museum. Hostility and exclusion will not be tolerated, nor will personal harassment or insults. We firmly oppose any form of discrimination based on racial attribution,  ethnic, cultural or social origin, religion or ideology, ability, age, gender or sexual identity and orientation. 

HOW MUCH IS A VISIT WITH CHILDREN?
The entrance for children and young adults under the age of 18 is free of charge.

IS IT NECESSARY TO ANNOUNCE MY VISIT IN ADVANCE?
No, we only ask larger groups (10 people and more) to announce their visit beforehand.

WHAT ARE THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN PLANNING A VISIT WITH A GROUP OF CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS?
Group visits (from 10 to a maximum of 28 people) are to be announced and booked beforehand with the Museumsdienst Hamburg, even if you are not planning to book a guided tour. More information here.

ARE CHILDREN PERMITTED TO VISIT THE MUSEUM WITHOUT SUPERVISION?
Children over the age of 8 are permitted to enter the museum without the supervision of adults. Please note, that visiting the Kinderreich is only possible under the supervision of an adult. Teachers and chaperones of studentclasses are obligated to be present during the visit of the museum at to supervise the group till leaving the museum.

CAN I BRING A STROLLER?
Yes, but we kindly advise you to plan your visit without a stroller. It is then easier to move through the house. We can only offer a few places to leave the stroller in the museum.

MAY I ENTER THE MUSUM WITH A BABY CARRIER OR WRAP?
Yes, you may.

ARE STUFFED ANIMALS PERMITTED?
Yes, they are.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO EAT AT THE MUSEUM?
Yes, but not inside the exhibitions. It is possible to bring food and non alcoholic beverages with you to consume in the foyer or the Freiraum. Food and drinks are offered in our restaurant "Destille" on the 1st floor.

WHERE CAN I CHANGE MY CHILD?
Changing tables are available at most restrooms.

WHAT PROGRAMME DO WE OFFER FOR CHILDREN?
The Hubertus Wald Kinderreich is open at weekends and school-holidays. Try our Tour für Kleine mit Großen: Ein Rätsel-Rundgang durchs Erdgeschoss (a scavanger hunt through the exhibitions on the ground floor in german). You can find the free booklets at the cash register. At the Freiraum you can find an area with games to play. Further offers for families can be found in the events calendar.

Just ask our staff if you would like to borrow a wheelchair or folding chairs.

Taking and publishing photographs and video or audio recordings is permitted when used for private purposes only. Please be aware of any exceptions, especially in special exhibitions. You will find corresponding notices in the exhibition spaces. Photoflash, tripods and other equipment like selfisticks (larger than 30 x 25 x 15 cm) may not be used. Exceptions require express permission. Please note that under certain conditions publication in any media (this also includes social media channels) may be an invasion of personal privacy and that it is your responsibility to obtain the necessary rights. Film, photo and audio recordings of employees are only permitted with their express consent. Taking photographs or making video or audio recordings for commercial purposes requires prior written permission from the museum. Please contact eventmanagement@mkg-hamburg.de. Please contact presse@mkg-hamburg.de for recordings with journalistic purposes.

Our supervisory staff are here to ensure your safety and that of the exhibits. The instructions of the supervisory staff must be followed. Anyone who does not comply with these visitor regulations and the instructions of the supervisory may be banned from the building by a representative of the museum.
