Derartige schildförmige Bleche sind in größerer Anzahl in den Gräbern von Tarquinia zutage gekommen. Sie sind dort offenbar in der 2. Hälfte des 6. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. bis ungefähr 470 v. Chr. hergestellt worden.
Der Typus ist relativ einheitlich: Im vertieften Zentrum finden sich neben Löwenköpfen auch Acheloos- und Silensköpfe. Hier bildet ein getriebener Löwenkopf mit heraushängender Zunge den Schmuck. Er ist mit zwei Nieten an dem ebenfalls getriebenen 'Schild' befestigt.
Solche Ziermedaillons wurden als Schmuck von Totenbetten (griech. Kline) oder von Grabwänden gedeutet, aber auch als Weihgaben.
