Kaku Kurita beginnt seine berufliche Laufbahn als Werbefotograf, bevor er sich ab 1964 dem Bildjournalismus zuwendet. In den 1960er und 1970er Jahren dokumentiert Kurita in umfassenden Serien zahlreiche Demonstrationen in Tokyo. Seine Bilder veranschaulichen, dass die Studentenbewegung und die Proteste gegen Vietnam-Krieg und Neoimperialismus weltumspannende Phänomene sind, die durch die geographische Lage Japans dort eine besondere Brisanz erhalten. Kurita ist noch heute als Fotograf aktiv und zählt zu den bekanntesten Bildreportern Japans. (Sven Schumacher)
