Sphingen, Löwen, Hippokampen und andere Tiere standen vor den Eingängen etruskischer Gräber, um für den Schutz der Anlage Sorge zu tragen. Gegenüber früheren Vorstellungen hat ein Wandel stattgefunden: Gezeigt wird nicht mehr ein Schrecken und Angst einflößendes, dämonisches Wesen, sondern eine gütige Wächterin.
