Schminkpalette in Form eines Nilpferds

Von besonderem Reiz ist diese Schminkpalatte in Form eines Nilpferds. Auf beiden Seiten befindet sich je eine kreisförmige Eintiefung für die Augen, die mit einem weiß-gelben Knochenstück eingelegt waren, von denen sich eines erhalten hat. In der Mitte des Rückens befindet sich eine Durchbohrung, die dem Aufhängen der Palette diente.
Schminkpaletten sind charakteristische Objekte der Naqada-Kultur des 4. Jahrtausends v. Chr. Auf den grau-grünen Schiefergesteinsplatten wurden Mineralien zerrieben und zu Farben angemischt, die der Bemalung von Skulpturen und auch zum Schminken dienten. Ihre besondere Bedeutung kommt in der Verwendung als Grabbeigabe zum Ausdruck.
