Schminkpaletten sind charakteristische Objekte der Naqada-Kultur des 4. Jahrtausends v. Chr. Auf den grau-grünen Schiefergesteinsplatten wurden Mineralien zerrieben und zu Farben angemischt, die der Bemalung von Skulpturen und auch zum Schminken dienten. Ihre besondere Bedeutung kommt in der Verwendung als Grabbeigabe zum Ausdruck.
