Charakteristisch für die Naqada-Kultur des 4. Jahrtausends v. Chr. sind die aus grau-grünem Schiefer gefertigten Schminkpaletten. Anfangs waren die Platten fast ausnahmslos geometrisch geformt; es folgten Platten mit figürlichen Verzierungen an einem Ende. Zugleich lassen sich aber auch tiergestaltige Platten nachweisen.
Die Schminkpaletten wurden zum Zerreiben und Anrühren von Schminke verwendet. Es handelt sich um Augenschminke schwarzer oder grüner Farbe, die im Kult zum Bemalen des Kultbildes, aber auch im täglichen Leben verwendet wurde.
Beliebt ist die Fischform. Auf beiden Seiten ist das Auge des kleinen Fisches eingeritzt, das Maul eingekerbt. Am oberen Rand befindet sich noch eine Durchbohrung.
