Die Schedelsche Weltchronik lässt sich als ambitionierter Versuch verstehen, den Lauf der Welt zwischen zwei Buchdeckeln einzufangen. Einem traditionellen Schema gemäß ist die Chronik in sieben Weltalter gegliedert und entfaltet die Abfolge der Zeiten von der biblischen Schöpfungsgeschichte bis zum Jüngsten Gericht. Doch sie orientiert sich nicht allein an der Bibel, auch Erkenntnisse der Antike und Ansichten des aufkommenden Humanismus finden sich darin wieder. Die Weltchronik zeigt damit ein Welt- und Geschichtsbild im Umbruch, das noch zwischen Glauben, Aberglauben und Wissen schwankt.
