Die Salb- oder Schminkschale erinnert an die Schminkpaletten der prädynastischen Zeit des 4. Jahrtausends v. Chr., obschon sie wohl in das Mittlere Reich zwischen 2137 und 1781 v. Chr. oder gar in die Spätzeit um 664 bis 332 v. Chr. zu datieren sein dürfte.
Während die Außenseite Maul, Augen, Kiemen und Schuppen durch Ritzlinien angedeutet hat, ist die Innenseite tropfenförmig ausgehöhlt.
Sie diente dem Anmischen von Schminken oder Salben.
