Der Fisch ist eines der ältesten Symbole für Jesus Christus und besonders bei den frühen Christen als Geheimzeichen im Einsatz. Zur Zeit ihrer Verfolgung dient es den Anhängern als Erkennungsmerkmal. Es wird bis heute verwendet. Das altgriechische Wort "ichtýs" bedeutet "Fisch", seine Anfangsbuchstaben stehen gleichzeitig auch für "Jesus Christus, Gottes Sohn, Erlöser".
