Im Zentrum des Bodens befindet sich ein nachträglich gebohrtes Loch. Angeblich befand sich die Schale früher in einer vergoldeten Kupferfassung des 12. Jahrhunderts und diente damals als Abendmahlskelch. Nach Axel von Saldern könnte das Loch aber auch zur Entnahme eine Materialprobe für eine chemische Analyse eingefügt worden sein.
