Das Sumoringen ist ursprünglich ein shintoistisches Ritual und wurde in der Anlage des Shinto-Tempels durchgeführt. Im Shinto ist das Ringen mit einer Prophezeiung verbunden: Die Siegermannschaft kann auch die bessere Ernte einbringen. Ursprünglich empfing der Sumo-Ringer göttliche Kräfte. In der Edo-Zeit hat sich das Ringen aber auch zum Sport und zur Unterhaltung gewandelt. (Aya Fujita)
