Der verliebte Pluto, Gott der Unterwelt, entführt Proserpina in sein Totenreich. Ihre Mutter Ceres sucht verzweifelt nach Proserpina, die für ein halbes Jahr, Frühling und Sommer, auf die Erde zurückkehren darf. Aus Kummer über die Abwesenheit ihrer Tochter im Herbst und im Winter lässt Ceres, die Göttin des Ackerbaus, in dieser Zeit nichts gedeihen. Das Vorbild der Statuette ist die berühmte, 1622 geschaffene Marmorgruppe des Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598–1680). (Christine Kitzlinger)
