Von 26 bis 36 n. Chr. war Pontius Pilatus Procurator (Statthalter) von Iudaea. Im Namen des Kaisers ließ er Münzen prägen, die als Provinzialprägungen bezeichnet werden.
Pilatus fällte im Prozess gegen Jesus auch das Todesurteil nach römischem Recht. Der Abdruck einer solchen Münze des Pontius Pilatus soll angeblich auf dem rechten Auge von Jesus auf dem berühmten Turiner Grabtuch zu finden sein.
