In römischer Zeit verwendete man farbiges, ornamentiertes Glas für Gefäße, Mosaike, Wanddekorationen und Möbelverzierungen.
Für die Herstellung wurden verschiedenfarbige Gläser zu Röhrchen und Stangen geformt. Diese wurden zusammengepresst und erhitzt, wodurch ein langer Stab entstand. Das nun in Scheiben geschnittene Glas wies unterschiedlichste amorphe oder florale Muster auf.
