Das Messer diente als Grabbeigabe und war in einem römischen Kessel niedergelegt, der bei Ausgrabungen von Gustav Schwantes um oder vor 1914 in der Nekropole von Nienbüttel (Landkreis Uelzen) gefunden wurde. Der aus der frühen Kaiserzeit stammende römische Kessel gehört zu den Importstücken nach Germanien. Ob er als Handelsware, Beutegut oder Geschenk in das Barbaricum gelangte, ist unklar. Er diente jedoch später als Urne.
