Die Maria Immaculata ist eine symbolische Darstellung der unbefleckten Empfängnis Mariens. Schon im Mittelalter galt Maria nicht nur als die jungfräuliche Gottesgebärerin, sondern sie selbst wurde bereits ohne Sünde empfangen. Das Relief dürfte als Modell für einen Altar gedient haben.
