Ein besonderes Monument der modernen Buchkunst ist die Edition von Vergils Eklogen der Cranach Presse, von Harry Graf Kessler konzipiert und von Maillol illustriert, welche bereits im Frühjahr 1914 auf der Handpresse begonnen, aber nach Unterbrechungen erst 1926 beendet wurde. Wie Kessler im Prospekt zur Ankündigung des Werkes formulierte, ist es ein Versuch, eine vollkommene Harmonie zwischen Schriftbild, Illustrationen und Papier herzustellen und damit alle Bestandteile des Buches in einem einheitlichen Gesamtkunstwerk zu verbinden. Das vorliegende Exemplar der französischen Edition in Leder gebunden und mit einer Extra-Suite trägt die Nr. XXXIII.
