Lekythos (sitzender Alter [Ödipus?])

Das Bild zeigt einen bärtigen, weißhaarigen Alten, der in gemustertem Chiton und Mantel mit ausgestreckten Armen auf einem Felsen sitzt. In der Rechten hält er einen Stab. Sein Haar ist mit einer Binde geschmückt. Hinter seinem Rücken hängt ein geflochtener Korb an der Wand.
Walter Kropatscheck hatte vorgeschlagen, in dem Sitzenden den greisen König Ödipus zu erkennen. Die Darstellung würde an die Eingangsszene des sophokleischen 'Ödipus auf Kolonos' erinnern. Der alte und blinde König – aus Theben vertrieben – erreicht, von seiner Tochter Antigone geführt, den Hain der Eumeniden im Demos Kolonos bei Athen. Das fein verzierte Gewand, die würdevolle, 'königliche' Haltung und die Haarbinde scheinen dies zu unterstützen.
Problematisch ist allerdings, dass die Tragödie erst nach dem Tod des Sophokles im Jahr 401 v. Chr. von seinem gleichnamigen Enkel aufgeführt wurde. Zwischen der Vase und dem Theaterstück liegen ungefähr 70 bis 80 Jahre.
