Der Typus ist in Luristan (West-Iran) weit verbreitet; es handelt sich um einen sog. Dämonenbezwinger oder auch "Herrn der Tiere", d. h. ein göttliches oder dämonisches Wesen, zu dem die Tiere in freundlichem oder feindlichem Sinn wesensmäßig dazugehören.
Die Tierkampfmotive sind in der Kunst des Alten Orients spätestens seit dem 2. Jahrtausend v. Chr. bekannt. Sie finden sich nicht nur bei diesen Standarten, sondern auch auf Rollsiegeln, Gemmen und in der bildenden Kunst.
Vornehmlich in Gräbern gefunden, ist die Funktion dieser Idolaufsätze nicht sicher bekannt. Ihre große Zahl legt nahe, dass sie als kleine Altarfiguren in jedem Haus standen und schließlich mit ins Grab gegeben wurden.
