Das Bild des Gekreuzigten wandelt sich. Im frühen Mittelalter steht Jesus triumphierend am Kreuz mit Königskrone, meist bekleidet. Später finden Leid, Schmerz und Verzweiflung ihren Ausdruck in einem qualvoll verdrehten, hängenden Körper.
