Nach der Öffnung der japanischen Häfen wurden die Tempel von Nikkō, etwa 100 Kilometer nördlich von Tokyo, beliebtes Reiseziel für Europäer und Amerikaner, die durch die stark farbigen Gebäudekomplexe und die Nähe zur Hauptstadt angezogen wurden. Nikkō ist noch heute eine bedeutende Pilgerstätte: Die Stadt beherbergt im Rinnō-ji-Tempel den Schrein des Edo-Shogunta-Gründers Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616). (Aya Fujita)
