In der attischen Überlieferung tritt der Kantharos vor allem als Kultgefäß des Weingottes Dionysos in Erscheinung; zahlreiche Vasenbilder zeigen ihn als Attribut des Gottes. In Böotien – nördlich der griechischen Landschaft Attika mit ihrem Zentrum Athen gelegen – dienten Kantharoi als Grabbeigaben und als Weihgeschenke. Seit dem ausgehenden 6. Jahrhundert v. Chr. wurden sie in großer Stückzahl hergestellt.
Schwarzgefirnisste Exemplare – wie dieses – kamen vor allem bei Grabungen im Kabirion zutage, einem westlich von Theben gelegenen Heiligtum für einen wohl aus Kleinasien stammenden Mysterienkult.
