Die kleine, kostbare Skulptur ist dazu bestimmt, in einer anspruchsvollen Privatsammlung aus der Nähe betrachtet zu werden. Hier wird der Sieg des Guten über das Böse zur heroischen Pose stilisiert. Herkules hat den Riesen Cacus in einer finsteren Höhle erwürgt, weil dieser Rinder gestohlen hat. Er zieht den Getöteten ins Freie, damit sich das Volk von der Niederlage des Tyrannen überzeugen kann. Der Halbgott Herkules personifiziert mit seinen zwölf Heldentaten Tapferkeit und Stärke. Diese Tugenden nach Vorlage der römischen Mythologie nehmen sich weltliche Herrschende in der Renaissance zum Vorbild.
