Der eigene Körper wird im Dialog mit der Natur bei Annie Brigman zum Ausdrucksträger. Die mit der New Yorker Photo-Secession verbundene Fotografin inszeniert sich selbst und ihre weiblichen Modelle als geheimnisvolle Wesen in der kargen Landschaft der kalifornischen Sierra Nevada. Mensch und Landschaft verschmelzen so zu einer symbolischen Einheit. Zeitgenossen fühlten sich durch Brigmans Bilder an altertümliche Sagen erinnert, an einen mystischen Urzustand, in dem der Mensch sich noch nicht von der Natur entfremdet hat, sondern im Einklang mit ihrer Schönheit und Erhabenheit existiert.
