Iustinus II. sitzt links; in seiner Rechten hält er den Globus mit Kreuz. Seine Frau Sophia sitzt rechts, ein Zepter in der Hand. Beide Köpfe werden von einem Nimbus umgeben.
Auf der Rückseite (Revers) befindet sich das Wertzeichen MY, im unteren durch eine Linie getrennten Abschnitt die Münzstätte NIKO(medeia). Über dem Wertzeichen ist ein Kreuz angegeben, darunter die Officina-Marke B. Links sind noch die Buchstaben AN(no) (im Jahre) erhalten, jedoch fehlt das Datum auf der rechten Seite.
Der 520 n. Chr. geborene Flavius Iustinus war vom 14. November 565 bis zum 5. Oktober 578 oströmischer Kaiser. Seine Frau Sophia war eine Nichte der 548 n. Chr. verstorbenen Kaisergattin Theodora.
In die Regierungszeit Iustinus II. fällt der Einfall der Langobarden nach Italien 568 n. Chr. Seit Anfang 574 n. Chr. zeigte der Kaiser nach Auskunft schriftlicher Quellen Anzeichen einer schweren Geisteskrankheit. Während einige Quellen die Erkrankung auf die militärischen Rückschläge im Westen und Osten zurückführten, sah der Monophysit darin eine göttliche Strafe für die Religionspolitik des Kaisers.
