Der französische Fotograf François Aubert, der sich zu dieser Zeit in Mexiko aufhielt, fotografierte nach der Hinrichtung Maximilians Leichnam und seine von Kugeln durchlöcherten Kleidungsstücke. Das Bild seiner Weste wurde später von dem erfolgreichen Pariser Fotografen André Disdéri (1819–1889) im populären Visitformat reproduziert. Disdéri retuschierte das Gestell, auf dem die Weste ursprünglich hing. Auf seinem Bild schwebt sie im luftleeren Raum und wird zu einer politisch aufgeladenen Reliquie des hingerichteten Kaisers überhöht. (Sven Schumacher)
