Die Drehleier ist ein Streichinstrument mit Tasten, deren Saiten von einem mit einer Kurbel versehenen Streichrad angespielt werden. Sie war in Europa bereits seit dem Mittelalter bekannt und lange Zeit Instrument von Spielleuten, Bauern und Bettlern. Bordunsaiten, die einen oder mehrere begleitende Haltetöne erzeugen, geben dem Instrument den typisch volksmusikalischen Klang. Dieses mit feinen Einlegearbeiten aus Elfenbein und Perlmutt verzierte Exemplar stammt aus der Werkstatt der Familie Pajot in Jenzat in der Auvergne, wo sie die Tradition des Instrumentenbaus über viele Generationen gepflegt hat.
