Die Brunnenmaske entstand vermutlich unter dem Einfluss des französischen Barockmalers und Bildhauers Pierre Puget (1620-1694), der in Rom, Marseille, Paris und Genua tätig war. Ornamentstiche des Puget-Schülers Bernard Turreau, genannt Toro (1672-1731), zeigen vergleichbare asymmetrische Volutenformen wie diese Brunnenmaske. Der Wasserstrahl floss durch den geöffneten Mund des Faunsknaben.
