Ein großer Teil der zahlreich erhaltenen Kinderbildnisse entstand vermutlich erst nach dem Tode der hoffnungsvollen Nachkommen. Plinius der Jüngere berichtet von einem gewissen Regulus, der nach dem Tod seines Sohnes aus Trauer eine Unzahl von Statuen und Bildnissen anfertigen ließ.
