Die ausdrucksvollste weltliche Form islamischer Kalligrafie ist die osmanische Sultansurkunde. Sie wird von dem reich verzierten, dreiecksförmigen Handzeichen des Sultans – die Tughra – bekrönt. Hier ist es der Namenszug von Sultan Mahmud I (1730–1754). Die Zeilen sind eng mit goldener, schwarzer und roter Tinte geschrieben und enden in hoch gezogenen Schwüngen, um eine nachträgliche Fälschung zu verhindern. Mit Ornamenten reich verzierte Belehnungsurkunden wie diese oder andere offizielle Urkunden hingen in Amtssitzen oder Privathäusern und dienten der Selbstdarstellung.
