Die Thora, der erste Teil der hebräischen Bibel, ist so heilig, dass sie mit bloßen Händen nicht angefasst werden kann. Zum Lesen der Pergamentrolle in der Synagoge benutzt man deshalb einen »Jad« (hebräisch für »Hand«), einen Thorazeiger.
