All You Knead
Metamorphosis of a Material

Modelling clay: with its formability and expressive power, it’s hard to imagine another material that offers so much room for creativity and is so easy to make at home out of only water, oil, salt, and starch as a malleable dough. Soft and easy to shape, modelling clay (also known under the brand name Plasticine) is not only popular with children but is also used in numerous creative fields. Especially in the area of animated film, this material has always formed the basis for telling imaginative stories. The Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg (MKG) is devoting the exhibition All You Knead. Metamorphosis of a Material to exploring the diversity and history of this fascinating material and its influence on contemporary pop culture, picking up where shows such as PIXAR: 25 Years of Animation (2013), comicleben_comiclife (2013/14), Hokusai x Manga (2016), and Game Masters (2016/17) left off. More than 40 international works of animation, contemporary art, and design from the 1950s to the present will be on view. The focus is on moving images: along with animated film classics and successful international films for children and adults, the exhibition will also feature music videos and experimental films. Examples from the visual arts, sculptures, and installations will also be presented, as well as models from product design and make-up art. Eventually, the show provides a look at the history of modelling clays and doughs, along with an extensive hands-on area that provides plenty of space for visitors to exercise their own creativity.

All You Knead. Metamorphosis of a Material is an exhibition designed by the Gewerbemuseum Winterthur/Switzerland. Curated by Susanna Kumschick, it was shown there in 2016 under the title “Plot in Plastilin.”
