The Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg (MK&G) is dedicating an exhibition to the material of glitter. But beyond curatorial explorations of its material and design history, the exhibition also reflects on glitter’s social and political significance. In doing so, the museum creates visibility for marginalised communities and opens space for narratives of queer identity, protest, and resistance. And yet, these voices often remain absent from the museum’s collection.
Within this institutional negotiation, tensions and expectations arise between representation and invisibility. This leads to questions of tokenism and whether the institution is taking on social responsibility. How deeply can an engagement with glitter go beyond the present moment and beyond the mere embellishment of the institution’s façade? Will this persistent material find its way into the depths of the collection – or does it even need to?
In a roundtable discussion with the exhibition’s curators, MK&G staff, and figures from Hamburg’s queer activist scene, we will explore the institutional challenges and potentials of glitter.
