Glitter has always been an ambivalent material. It comes to life through light and movement: glitter glitters. It has also been used as a material of empowerment, making the invisible visible, and as a tool for resistance and dissent particularly in feminist and queer contexts. At the same time, it is a material of adornment, decoration, disguise, and transformation.

But what exactly is glitter and what is it not? How do we navigate its history, shaped by appropriation, affection, artificiality, and even violence? What impact does glitter have on the environment? And how much misogyny, queerphobia, and moralising hedonism critique is embedded in the media discourse around its ecological footprint?

These questions will be explored in a conversation between the exhibition’s curators, Nina Lucia Groß and Julia Meer, and Nicole Seymour, a US-based cultural scholar and author of "glitter" (Bloomsbury, 2022).

The event will be held in English and is part of the supporting programme for the exhibition "Glitter".
