During the last part of the 19th century, posters of enormous size were produced in the United States of America assembled from many individual sheets. This particular poster with five colours printed on 18 sheets took 90 printings to complete. Generally speaking, such posters were commissioned by theatres and circuses to advertise for large outdoor events. They needed to attract large crowds in the shortest amount of time possible. This poster created to advertise the play “Master and Man” depicts a struggle between men of different classes in front of a factory furnace, surely to a great spectacle.
