image /
Safavid dynasty, 1700/01Iransteel, copper, brassH 86 cm; W 49 cm

This standard used to be carried in religious processions. It consists of two mobile overlapping discs with two further discs and an orb attached at the pinnacle. The orb is also mobile. When exposed to a breeze, this standard would produce delightful variations of light and shade. The perforated décor inscribed with calligraphy quoting a verse from the Quran and the vines with flowers are all cast in iron. The artist has even engraved his signature at the bottom.
