Paco Rabanne (*1934)1966Parisaluminium, metal rings, metal studsL 74 cm

The short strap dress is made out of aluminium plates joined with metal rings. The avant-garde outfit, which is made without a single thread, does not fully adapt to the body: it clacks and is strictly speaking unwearable, as the designer Paco Rabanne himself said of his designs. In the 1960s the trained architect aspired to create fashion from new, contemporary materials and techniques.  Sheet aluminium, plastic and leather were among his favoured fabrics. Rabanne greatly invigorated haute couture.
