The photographer Anne Brigman was a member of the world-renowned American art association Photo-Secession. This group of photographers was founded by Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946) and Fred Holland Day (1864-1933) in New York around 1900. The group dedicated itself to the art of photography. Brigman was respected and regarded for her support of feminism and naturalism. Her oeuvre is characterized by original images of female nudes in natural settings. This symbol-heavy photograph entitled "Soul of the Blasted Pine" is a self-portrait and hints at her belief in regard to nature as something that offers a spiritual experience.
