In 1925, the Sternberg brothers, Vladimir and Georgii, were awarded a gold medal for their sensational stage designs at the Art Deco exhibition in Paris. During the following years, they dedicated their work mainly on film posters, as the Russian film industry imported numerous American silent films. The film subtitles were modified to concur with the socialist worldview at the time. The posters designed by the Sternberg brothers were commissioned by the state film company, and are among the best examples of Soviet avant-garde design from the 1920s.
