After he returned from England in 1910, the artist Mihaly Biró soon became a leading Hungarian graphic designer of advertisement posters. Having won a poster competition, he had familiarised himself with the single-minded and direct style of English advertising. As a member of the Hungarian socialist party, he had experience creating powerful political posters before World War I. His powerful red “Hammer-Man”, which had initially been used in advertising the Socialists’ periodical “The People’s Voice”, soon advanced to the level of becoming a popular allegory for the Hungarian Social Democracy.
