Eugène Grasset (1841-1917)1894ParisColour lithograph 60 x 40 cm

His illustrations and designs for the Arts and Crafts movement made Eugène Grasset one of the great artistic inspirations for Art Nouveau. His exhibition at the Parisian Gallery Salon des Cent in early 1894 initiated the international of Parisian Art Nouveau. This particular poster played a key-role in this historic dissemination. Solid, yet decorative flowing outlines contain planes of colour. The poster declares that ideal beauty is not to be sought in noble faces alone, but also in simple things. This ideal extends to the leaf of goutweed or herb gerard, which the pictured female artist is carefully studying.
