Polish posters from the 1950s and 1960s have a special reputation, as graphic artists from all over the world went to Warsaw to study. Jan Lenica was known as one of the masters of Polish graphic art. This poster, announcing Alban Berg’s opera “Wozzeck” from 1964, is his most famous work, although it was not used as advertisement at the time. Sixteen years went by and the poster was used by the Polish union Solidarnosc as propaganda to fight for democratic rights. In this context, the aggressive face depicted in the poster obtained a completely different meaning.
