In 1908, Frank Pick was appointed to the position of publicity manager for the London Underground. He was eager to introduce a unified poster format, but above all, he was interested in quality design. Many of the best pre-World War II English posters were designed for traffic enterprises belonging to the English capital. They served as examples for commercial advertising. The American graphic designer, Edward McKnight Kauffer, an expatriate who resided in England, was one of the leading poster designers of the British Isles. This particular example of his work is promoting a more intense use of the underground during off-peak hours.
