August Sander’s portrait of three young farmers was taken in the Westerwald in 1914, and is one of the iconic images in the history of photography. The picture is only part of an ambitious project. Sander had set himself the task, with his encyclopaedic life’s work, entitled "People of the 20th Century ", of researching the characteristic features of various social groups and classes as a means of deeper reflection on the nature of Man. The work remained unpublished during his lifetime.
