The photo of the actress Romy Schneider, then just 23, was taken in a very private moment in the studio of the German photographer F.C. Gundlach. What he captured was the picture of an unusually pensive, introverted young woman who had hitherto presented herself in public as a cheerful, uncomplicated person. The actress was to die 21 years later under circumstances which were never cleared up. Gundlach won fame in the 1950s with his portraits, fashion photos and work as a photo journalist.
