Many European artists collected sculptures from Africa and the South Pacific in the beginning of the 20th century. They inspired non-traditional depictions of nudes and a revival of wooden sculpture, especially among the artists belonging to the Dresden art group Die Brücke. The famous painter Erich Heckel carved two such maple sculptures, one of which he gifted to the MKG. In 1937, the sculpture was confiscated and has been considered lost ever since. In 1966, the second figurine was donated to the museum.
