The Persian Empire of the Samanids (873-999) produced highly impressive ceramic bowls with inscriptions. The letters were always engraved in stark contrast to the base. The body of the vessels were mostly covered with a white slip. This bowl has been coated in manganese-brown and inscribed with a blessing in Kufic calligraphy. The harmonious distribution of the white letters shows the potter followed a design carefully when decorating the vessel.
