The 18th century was the golden age of fan; the luxury item embodied the art of feminine seduction. In an idyllic garden, a lady dressed in a fashionably ruffled robe à la Polonaise hands sweets from a cornet to a little, no less elegantly dressed girl. To the left there is an ornamental depiction of a symbol of friendship, to the right a map of the Isle de Ceilan - Ceylon, today Sri Lanka. The miniature painting on white silk is framed with sequins that have been sewn onto the cloth. The perforated ivory sticks are embellished with silver and gold plate.
