Polka dots were highly fashionable in the 1950s and lend a light note to this elegant dress, too. The fitted top with its low cleavage, complemented by the full balloon skirt, creates a very feminine shape. A short dress for formal social occasions was introduced around 1947. As cocktail dress it is firmly established as a part of any haute couture collection. The Spaniard Cristóbal Balenciaga, who opened a shop in Paris in 1937, was one of the leading fashion designers in Europe and greatly influenced the style of his time.
